Welcome to the World Beauties Award! The WBA TEAM and the dx DA-RC group have established, starting from 2024, a permanent award aimed at enhancing and promoting the greatest possible worldwide number of sites of historical, cultural and tourist interest on a beautiful 11 Meters Band.

Let’s meet Mauro, a true veteran of the 11 meters whose unit number 156 has become a real trademark! So far often present at almost every appointment on air with SIBA! Mauro transmits from the city of Conegliano and Revine Lago (his second qth), located in the province of Treviso, in the north-east of Italy. Here is his self-introduction:

My passion for radio began in 1970 with the use of two walkie-talkies, a gift from a friend. This initial experience triggered a progressive interest in radio communications, leading me to explore “Radio Clubs” as meeting points and to delve into the technical aspects through resources such as the periodical magazine “CQ Elettronica”. My amateur radio station has evolved over time, overcoming the initial economic limitations with ingenuity and self-produced resources. The initial configuration included a Midland 1387C transceiver, operating in AM modulation only and on 23 channels. Subsequently, I acquired a Midland 13-878 with SSB mode and always 23 channels.

The evolution continued with the addition of a VFO (Variable Frequency Oscillator) by Elt Elettronica, a Cte Speedy linear amplifier equipped with a 6KD6 tube and a Cte Spitfire directional antenna controlled by a Stolle rotor. In 1977 I got my first HF (High Frequency) transceiver, a Yaesu FT101E.

My amateur radio activity was recognized with the achievement of the “One Hundred Countries Award” diploma and the full “Usa Award”, both obtained in 1981.

Currently I have two operating stations. The first, located in Conegliano (locator JN65DV), is equipped with a Yaesu FTDX 9000D PEP transceiver and an Icom IC 7610. The antenna system includes a 5-element monoband delta loop (made by Ivan 090) and a 5-element yagi (made by Sante 155), a Silent Two solid state amplifier and an OM Power 4001A tube amplifier. The second station, located on Mount Boral (locator JN66CA), uses a 3-element delta loop (made by Ivan) as its main antenna. The transceiver section is composed of an Icom IC 7800 and an Icom IC 7300, the latter enhanced with an additional filter PCB provided by IK8TNG. Amplification is provided by a Silent One solid-state amplifier and an Acom 2100A tube amplifier. The power supply for this mountain station is guaranteed by a stand-alone photovoltaic system.

Active and competitive participation in the amateur radio world requires meticulous planning and constant commitment, which translates into careful programming of activations.

The SIBA “Le bellezze italiane sarde” award was conceived to promote knowledge of the artistic and landscape heritage of Sardinia. Another idea could be to combine a landscape itinerary with a food and wine tour, offering a complete experience to discover the riches of our country.

Thank you Mauro for your beautiful words and introduction, we greet you cordially and look forward to seeing you in the next SIBA activations, always as one of the firsts in the log!

SIBA TEAM.
