MONTE POGGIOLO CASTLE
Probably built as a watchtower for the citadel of Castrocaro, the first historical documents that indirectly report information about this fortress date back to 906 and mention a certain “Count Berengario of the castle of Montepoggiolo”. From the fortress of Montepoggiolo one could see “the plain of papal Romagna from Faenza to Ravenna, and the Adriatic, so that it is not possible to have any considerable body pass between these walls and the Terra del Sole during the day without being warned”. Located in a strategically elevated position, the Rocca di Montepoggiolo was contested over the centuries by the various lordships of Forlì, Faenza and Castrocaro. Chronological events of the castle of Monte Poggiolo: In 1080, the castle of Monte Poggiolo passed from the Ordelaffi to the Orgogliosi. In 1124 it passed to the Counts Pagani, to whom Pope Gregory VII had granted the fief of Castrocaro. In 1179 it was burned and destroyed by Ghibelline troops. In 1185 it was rebuilt by the Pagani who had taken refuge there after being driven out of Castrocaro by Cardinal Ottaviano degli Ubaldini. From 1234 to 1317 it remained in the possession of the city of Faenza. In 1317 it passed to the Ordelaffi family who sold it to the city of Forlì. In 1382 Francesco Paulucci di Calboli who was lord of Monte Poggiolo ceded the fortress to the city of Florence. In 1403, together with the castle of Castrocaro, it was annexed to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. In 1471 it was decided to expand it from a simple tower to a real fortress, under the direction of the architect Giuliano da Maiano. In 1482 the castle of Monte Poggiolo was recognized as Florentine. In 1564, with the construction of Terra del Sole a very short distance away, the fortress of Monte Poggiolo became its lookout. In 1661 the fortress of Monte Poggiolo was damaged by the earthquakes that hit the Romagna region that year. In 1772 the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo I disarmed the fortress-city of Terra del Sole and the fortress of Monte Poggiolo. In 1782, following the auction of the state-owned properties of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, the fortress of Montepoggiolo was purchased by private individuals. Today the castle is closed to the public and fenced but still maintains its unbreakable charm. The Rocca di Montepoggiolo, built in brick, still has an irregular quadrilateral plan. It has four cylindrical towers at the corners of the fortress characterized by large sloping walls. A large cylindrical tower, the main tower, serves as the keep of the fortified complex. In the framework of the defensive fortifications designed to control the surrounding territory, Montepoggiolo represents the most classic type of military outpost connected to a larger and more complex defensive system capable of transforming, if necessary, the fortress into a real “war machine”. Today it is in a state of abandonment and structural degradation even if various partial restoration interventions have been started which have not yet returned the fortress to its ancient beauty. A legend is linked to the Rocca di Monte Poggiolo which tells of the existence, at the time of Caterina Sforza, of a tunnel that led from the inside to the fortress of Ravaldino, in Forlì.
