The Cuccuru Nuraxi area is located on a hill overlooking the surrounding area up to the Gulf of Cagliari.
The name given to the area refers to the presence of a complex nuraghe with a village, of which little remains today. Inside, towards the end of the Bronze Age, a large, unique sacred well was built.
What makes it original is first of all its location at a height much higher than the water table. The cylindrical tube, lined with rows of stones, in fact crosses almost the entire hill on which the well stands. Descending to a depth of 12 metres, it enters a narrow siphon dug directly into the rock, which descends for another 10 metres.
Another element of originality is the fact that the access staircase does not end directly on the well, but leads into a hypogeal tholos. The actual well opens up in the floor of the chamber, surrounded by a monolithic circular ring.
