Its origins date back to the famous episode of the Apparition: on May 26, 1432, the peasant Giannetta de Vacchi was in the Mazzolengo meadow, near the village of Caravaggio, when she witnessed the apparition of a woman who, for her majesty and beauty, she immediately recognized as the Virgin Mary.
As evidence of the event, a new spring gushed out in the field, whose waters were able to heal ailments. In the centuries immediately following, a place of worship was built to remain as an eternal memory of the event: this building later became the current Basilica of the Sanctuary of Caravaggio.
In the place of the original spring stands the Sacro Speco, a space decorated with mosaics and works of art; the waters of the spring, now channeled, can be drunk and collected. Going up towards the surface you come across the high altar, and above it the monumental dome. The symmetry between the monumental dome, which with its approximately 60 meters of height dominates the surrounding fields, the main altar of the Sanctuary and the Speco itself, as well as that between the building, the external fountain and the Viale is a wonderful example of study of proportions and precision in the architecture of the construction. The interior of the Basilica is richly decorated with numerous paintings, the work of the Caravaggio masters Moriggia and Cavenaghi, by frescoed chapels and by a precious organ of over 5000 pipes that dominates the nave.
The Sanctuary of Caravaggio hosted the pastoral visit of Pope John Paul II in 1992, who stayed here for three days, from 19 to 21 June, during his stay in Lombardy. The rosary, a gift from the Pope, was placed in the hand of the much venerated statue of the Madonna. The papal apartments and the chapel of the spirituality center that the Pontiff inaugurated remain in the rooms of the Sanctuary.
Viale Giovanni XXIII, about 4km from the Brebemi motorway toll booth, about 1km from the city train station. The Sanctuary has parking for private vehicles.
The Basilica can be visited freely during the opening hours of the Sanctuary, limited to the spaces of the nave and the Sacro Speco.
The spirituality center and the Pope’s chapel, as well as some areas of the Basilica can be visited by prior arrangement with the management of the Sanctuary.
