Sant’Antioco, the ancient Sulky, one of the oldest cities in the entire West. The first traces of frequentation of the island of Sant’Antioco date back to the Neolithic, about 7 thousand years ago, evidenced by ceramics with decorations made with the cardium shell, by the presence of small tools in flint and obsidian and by remains of terrestrial and fish fauna meals. Later, about 5000 years ago, along the isthmus that connects the island of Sant’Antioco to the mainland, two menhirs were erected called Su Para and Sa Mongia, that is, the priest and the nun, which the stories of popular tradition indicate as the petrified bodies of two religious lovers, struck by the divine curse that reached them during their escape. From the same period are the Domus de Janas of Monte Is Baccas and the hut bottoms found right in the city center, near the Su Pisu Fort, on top of the hill where the city of Sulky was founded 3,000 years ago and where the most imposing nuraghe on the island stood in the Bronze Age: a building consisting of a central tower, surrounded by three towers connected to each other by a mighty bastion. Various other remains from the Nuragic Age are scattered around the island and among them two nuraghe built in strategic points: the Grutti Acqua, with its nuragic village and sacred area, and the Corongiu Murvonis. The funerary area is represented by the imposing tomb of giants Su Niu ‘e Su Crobu, located on a rocky hill near the Grutti Acqua nuraghe, near Cala Sapone. It is well preserved in the classic shape with a rectangular funerary corridor about ten meters long and 1.2 meters wide, and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding sea. A little further downstream is an ancient spring, enclosed in a well temple where sacred rituals were probably practiced. At the base of the hill is a Nuragic lake, a source of water supply for the nearby village. The banks show signs of human intervention with the arrangement of stone blocks that frame it. Thanks to the discoveries made in the latest excavation campaigns, we now know that the Nuragic settlement of what would later become the Iron Age Sulky, a port city and emporium, was frequented by foreign merchants and sailors, as demonstrated by three fragments of a bowl dating back to 1100 BC of Philistine type. The Philistine presence in Sardinia is also proven by a fragment of a terracotta sarcophagus of the same type as those found in the ancient coastal city states of present-day Lebanon, i.e. the original logistical bases of the Philistines. Sulky experienced a flourishing period of trade, especially at the beginning of the 8th century BC. in the so-called Cronicario area where two cups made in Tyre and a ceramic from Ischia were brought to light. The area of the settlement, which slopes down towards the sea, was regularized with steps, and the buildings of the Roman imperial age were built on the previous blocks of the Punic age. During the excavations, the oldest layers were well preserved and allowed for a complete analysis. Among the walls that emerged during the excavation, in addition to numerous stone blocks of the Punic age reused in Roman structures, a pillar about 2 m high came to light, entirely built in raw clay bricks and plastered, 1.3 meters long and half a meter wide, that is, exactly one cubit by two and a half cubits if they used the units of measurement of the Levantine Syro-Palestinian areas. The evidence of Phoenician, Punic, Greek and Etruscan material culture, found in Sulky and its surroundings, testifies to intense and wide-ranging commercial traffic, placing the site among the most interesting emporia in the Mediterranean.
