he name «S’Omu ‘e S’Orcu», or «The House of the Ogre» is linked to Nuraghi, Tombs of the Giants and Domus de Janas. The ogre, in the Latin world, indicated the god of the dead, while for popular imagination it is an evil demon: in Sardinia, it was even believed that the nuraghi were inhabited by these terrifying creatures.
The Nuraghe S’Omu ‘e S’Orcu can be dated between 1500 and 900 BC, having been built in different phases, and stands to the west of the current town of Domusnovas. It is a complex type of Nuraghe, consisting of a central tower surrounded by a polylobed bastion and a rampart with five towers that delimit the internal spaces.
Adjacent to the nuraghe, on the south side, stands a cluster of huts intended for housing, meeting places and various clan activities.
The Nuragic Complex stands on the top of a hill that acts as a watershed between the Marganai limestone massif and the Cixerri valley.
The central keep (A), has a circular plan, has an architraved entrance to the south and an internal room with an elliptical plan. The remains of an internal staircase suggest the presence of at least one upper floor.
This central tower, whose current height is about 4.50 m., is surrounded by a trilobate bastion (C, D, E) that delimits an internal courtyard (B) with an adjoining probable cistern for collecting water.
The outer wall is made up of at least five towers (G, H, I, L, M) connected by rectilinear curtains, which protect the central body but leave the north-east side exposed. Outside the outer wall, especially to the south, there are circular huts belonging to the village and other later structures with a quadrangular plan, attributable to the Roman or late medieval period.
From an architectural point of view, the Nuraghe is characterized by a central tower and a polylobed bastion built with blocks of local limestone (from Marganai) arranged in irregular rows or oblique lines; the complex is surrounded by a more recent outer wall, built using large blocks of rough-hewn limestone and arranged in fairly regular horizontal axes. These different construction techniques suggest that the central tower dates back to a period between 1500 and 1200 BC, the outer wall to between 1200 and 900 BC, while the bastion would be placed in a time span between the two periods. Although the original height has been lost, we assume that the central tower was much higher than the bastion and the outer wall.
