NECROPOLIS OF TUVIXEDDU It is among the largest Punic necropolises in the Mediterranean (1571 burial chambers have been spared to date). However, the quarry work of the mid-20th century has largely devastated it, affecting the mounds of Tuvumannu (completely flattened) and that of Tuvixeddu (in part), once united in a single hill.

Recently, the road leading to Villa Mulas-Mameli (previously Massa), abandoned and not visitable, right on the top of the hill, has been made accessible.

Then there are still numerous underground tunnels dug into the soft rock, which are among the longest in the Cagliari area; they go for kilometers underground and reach right below the open-air necropolis. Among these there is also a conduit attributable to the ancient aqueduct, now largely disappeared, which made the Roman city of Karalis habitable.

The necropolis contains some important tombs such as the painted ones of Sid (or of the Warrior) or of the Ureo (the only testimonies of Carthaginian figurative funerary painting).
Another burning issue is that of the gigantic Canyon (with 30 meter high walls, 900 meters long and 10 meters wide) that should have connected via Is Mirrionis with via Is Maglias and via S.Avendrace to streamline city traffic and through which once passed the vehicles that went from Tuvumannu to the crushing plant of Italcementi, the company responsible for the territorial devastation – extending the responsibility also to the competent authorities for the lack of control and, indeed, the lack of interest shown until the 70s/80s when the mining activity ended.

It was a time when the love for the conservation of nature and for archaeology was not as felt as today but the need to rebuild Cagliari after the bombings of the war was stronger. In fact, many tombs became homes for displaced persons in the post-war period.      https://www.facebook.com/share/p/mjTXrnGDSVXZhC42/
