Located in the south-western tip of Sardinia, the Island of San Pietro is one of the most important of the Sulcis Archipelago as well as the sixth largest Italian island with a surface area of approximately 51 km². Of volcanic origin, the Island of San Pietro has 33 km of coastline, most of which is rocky and characterized by the presence of caves and cliffs with the sole exception of the eastern front, where the coast is flat and sandy. From a naturalistic point of view, the Island of San Pietro in Sardinia has a typically Mediterranean nature, dominated by the presence of plants such as dwarf palms, strawberry trees, myrtle and juniper, while as regards fauna, the island is home to the Corsican gull and the peregrine falcon as well as the rare Eleonora’s falcon. Despite its size, the Island of San Pietro has only one inhabited center, Carloforte, a characteristic village located in the eastern part and inhabited by approximately six thousand people.
