It was a fortress of the Doria family and a judicial residence, today it is home to an evocative museum: from a promontory overlooking the Gulf of Asinara, in the north-west of Sardinia, it dominates one of the most beautiful villages in Italy
It has survived the centuries and resisted time, always in excellent condition thanks to various restorations, now within its walls it preserves a heritage of techniques and knowledge faithfully handed down and has become one of the symbols of Sardinian craftsmanship. The castle of Castelsardo stands on top of a hill overlooking the sea, very similar to how it must have been originally, and continues to ‘live’ as the seat of the museum of Mediterranean weaving: its rooms exhibit artisanal products from Sardinia and countries of the Mediterranean basin, made with the technique of weaving plant fibers.
The fortress was built by the noble Doria family with the name of Castelgenovese, probably during the 13th century, to protect the noble possessions on the island and to control the maritime connections with the Ligurian city. It was the residence of Brancaleone Doria and Eleonora d’Arborea for a few years, then fell into Aragonese hands in 1448. The conquerors made it a strategic defensive stronghold by erecting towers and bastions and continually renovating it to ensure its efficiency. It kept its new name, Castel Aragonese, until the 18th century, when, having passed under Savoy control, the castle and the village surrounded by the walls took the current name of Castelsardo.
From the castle promontory you will observe a panorama of the sea, to the west, up to the coast of Asinara, to the east towards Santa Teresa Gallura. You will walk along the original guard walkways and admire the fortified bastions and the drawbridge. Inside, the nine rooms of the museum await you, arranged on two levels, which show the environments of use and the techniques of weaving – crisscrossed and spiral – of the fibers, with objects of everyday use, for the conservation of agricultural products, for fishing and breeding, up to the artifacts with a magical and religious meaning. You will be surprised by su fassoi, a typical boat of the fishermen of the Cabras and Santa Giusta ponds, made with marsh hay, rush ropes and reed nails. The most typical tradition of Castellana is that of basket making, with corbule, baskets, sieves and sieves.
The art of weaving also pervades the streets of the village: you will observe the basket makers, custodians of centuries-old traditions, weaving palms, hay and raffia and showing visitors their creations, a fascinating mix of tradition and innovation.
Castelsardo has many architectural gems: you will visit the Cathedral of Sant’Antonio Abate, with its bell tower overlooking the sea, the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Palazzo La Loggia. And then there is the sea with the Castelsardo marina and the beach of Lu Bagnu, a hamlet two kilometers from the town: flat rocks, soft sand and crystal clear water protected by the Mediterranean greenery.
