Lake Cixerri and its Roman remains

One of the natural beauties that can be found a few steps from Uta is Lake Cixerri, a large artificial lake in Sardinia, created following the construction of a dam on the river of the same name Cixerri (a large tributary of the Riu Mannu with which it flows into Cagliari at the level of the Stagno di Santa Gilla.

Lake Cixerri
An immense high-level resource, Lake Cixerri boasts a capacity of 25 million cubic meters of water, usually used during periods of drought, to support the activities of the area that would risk ruining the harvest (and work) of an entire year.

If the construction of the dam gave rise to the birth of this artificial basin, two banks today constitute a ‘natural’ delimitation: built starting in 1980, Lake Cixerri was completed in 1992 but it was only in 2002 that it was officially and definitively tested, giving life to a great water and tourist resource in Southern Sardinia.

Roman roads emerged in Cixerri
In 2016, this artificial lake returned to the center of national attention thanks to the discovery of two great Roman testimonies: a road, already discovered in 2011, known as the ancient “a Karalis Sulcos” which in Roman times led from Cagliari to the mines of Iglesias and the legendary city of Metalla; another discovered in 2016 which seems to be directed towards Uta-Assemini and whose function is still being questioned today.

This testifies to the importance of these territories in Southern Sardinia already in Roman times, when this land was already inhabited by a well-established and organized community.
