INFO ON THE MATZACCARA PANORAMIC POINT: One of the most panoramic points in the territory of San Giovanni Suergiu (SU) is the one where the Forestry Authority lookout is located, near the hamlet of Matzaccara. Confirming the strategic position of this location is the World War II fort that still presides over it, a structure from which the entire gulf of Palmas and the lagoon of Sant’Antioco could be controlled up to the island of San Pietro. From the summit it is also possible to observe the area of the hamlet of Matzaccara, rich in archaeological evidence that is still little known: although it has not been possible to precisely identify the site of the ancient Populum, scholars agree in identifying this area as the location of the center cited by the geographer Ptolemy in the 2nd century AD. In support of this hypothesis there are conspicuous remains of necropolises and thermal structures. In addition to these, some Domus de janas and Nuragic structures are also noteworthy.
