The SIC Costa di Nebida, now a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), covers a north-south distance of about 20 km as the crow flies, involving the coastal areas and the inland areas near the coast of the municipalities of Buggerru, Iglesias, Gonnesa and Portoscuso. Most of the most significant elements of the Sardinian coastal morphologies are concentrated in this site: Paleozoic limestone cliffs, sandy and pebbly beaches, outcrops of Cambrian age schists and the complex of red-violet Ordovician puddingstones (a characteristic formation of the Iglesiente).
The SAC has considerable historical and landscape importance, due to the beauty of its coasts, formed by cliffs overlooking the sea and more or less large islets (Pan di Zucchero), facing them and the suggestive old mines located throughout the territory. The variability of colors, all very intense, makes the coast completely unique.
From a vegetational point of view, the area owes its importance to the presence of unique plant formations in Europe, attributable to numerous habitats of community interest. The sectors of greatest interest from a floristic point of view are the calcareous ones, which host a specialized flora characterized by the richness of endemic species, especially linked to rocky environments and therefore more influenced by the composition of the rocks.
The human activity that has most marked these territories is mining, which on the one hand causes a strong impact on the territory, on the other, in some cases, the debris deposits host a rich contingent of endemic species, elsewhere rare and sporadic, which have found on the contaminated substrates a suitable terrain to form large populations, such as Limonium merxmuelleri, a species exclusive to these environments. The habitats of community interest cover an area equal to approximately half of the surface of the SCI. The remaining part mainly features aspects of garrigue and low scrub derived from mature formations, in addition to anthropized areas, represented largely by cultivated land, which extends particularly in the southern part of the SCI.
The area is important, from a faunal point of view, especially for the presence of numerous species of birds of community interest, some of which are priority, which gravitate or reproduce in it. The area is especially important for the feeding and reproduction of the peregrine falcon.
