The Scivu Oasis consists of two segments of the coastal strip of the Riu Scivu – Piscinas SCI that penetrate the hinterland for a few kilometers and a large portion of coastal strip and then hilly territory that divides the Capo Pecora SCI in two.
The coastal dune complex is covered with thick Mediterranean scrub vegetation composed mainly of junipers, wild olive trees, brooms, phillyrea and myrtle; on the secondary dunes there is an association made up of prickly juniper and mastic, which contributes significantly to the consolidation of the dunes. Other important endemic species are also present in this environment, including the Sardinian-Corsican linajola and the Sardinian bugloss. Walking along the Juniper path you can encounter the majestic specimens of our prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus L. subsp. macrocarpa) that survived the fires and indiscriminate cutting by man. On the Rio Scivu trail you can breathe in the scents of wild rosemary with those of myrtle and the stormy sea, concluding the walk at the waterfall close to the beach. In this part of the oasis you can admire, within a few meters, endemic species typical of the hilly landscape together with those of the coastal environment.
Walking along these majestic dunes it is easy to come across herds of deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus) that reign supreme in the area reaching up to the cliffs from which the beach of Is arenas starts.
The Scivu Oasis also includes a cork oak forest that extends for about 150 hectares. The path that runs through it takes its name from a centuries-old oak tree that represents the heart of the forest. This majestic plant has managed to survive the numerous fires that have affected the area over the centuries.
Our coastline deserves a separate observation. The golden beach that extends for about 3 km disappears at a glance, delimited only by the majestic sandstone cliffs and the Scivu promontory. In this splendid beach defined by some as “talking” due to the particular noise made by walking on it, nests of Caretta caretta have been reported.
In the skies above the Oasis it is often possible to spot the kestrel, the buzzard and the peregrine falcon, bee-eaters, cormorants and, sometimes, even the eagle. The imperial raven, a medium-large sized bird, characterised by the total black colour of its body, also frequents the rocky areas from the coast to the promontory. The presence of the more common Hermann’s tortoise has been confirmed on the promontory.
The presence of a rich entomofauna has also been confirmed, among which a type of beetle endemic to the south-western coast of the island stands out, the Chelotrupes hiostius, which can be admired all year round with the exception of the
