The first cable-stayed bridge in Sardinia is in Monserrato (Cagliari, South Sardinia)
Whoever goes to Monserrato (CA) today finds a futuristic bridge that crosses the Strada Statale 554 and connects the municipality to Sestu passing through the university citadel: it is the Emanuela Loi bridge, the first cable-stayed bridge in Sardinia, a work that tells an engineering story, but also a civil one thanks to the woman to whom it is dedicated.
The relaunch also passes through the bridge:
Designed in 2005 and inaugurated in 2009, the Emanuele Loi Bridge is part of a general project to relaunch this area that passes through centers of attraction such as the University and works that facilitate communications such as, precisely, the bridge. The idea of building a cable-stayed bridge (i.e. suspended) arose from the practical need to cross the existing state road, but also from the desire to embellish the urban landscape with a modern and aesthetically refined structure: the support cables are arranged in a harp along a slender antenna in the shape of an inverted Y.
Who was Emanuela Loi:
The Provincial Council of Cagliari unanimously decreed to dedicate the bridge to Emanuela Loi, a police officer originally from Sestu and a member of Paolo Borsellino’s escort. Emanuela Loi was the first female officer to lose her life on duty, in the Via d’Amelio massacre, at just 25 years old. Her family was present at the inauguration of the plaque commemorating her on the bridge, a structure that looks to the future without forgetting the past.
