Piana Island is an island that is part of the Sylvie archipelago at the southwestern tip of Sardinia.The island has an extension of 22 hectares and a perimeter of 1.8 km, it is located half a nautical mile north-east of the island of San Pietro.
History
The island was owned by the Marquises of Villamarina who in the 17th century lived side by side with fishermen and tuna fishermen; in fact, one of the largest historic tuna fishing companies of that time was based on the island, with its own landing places and services.Many of the historic buildings on the island, which were the operational headquarters and management of this company, have been perfectly renovated and adapted to residential functions, other structures, to form a village-shaped housing complex, complete, autonomous and modern, were added later.
Tourism
Isola Piana is also a nature reserve, among the protected species the small Eleonora’s Falcon, also known as Falco eleonorae (in honor of Queen Eleonora of Arborea), stands out for its beauty and importance, which nests in colonies located not far away. Two species of seagulls, the Kentish plover, and some passerines nest on the island.On the island there is only the “Residenza Villamarina”; it is a single condominium that territorially includes the entire island, it is made up of private spaces and residences, common use and service spaces, energy and water reserves. About 200 condominiums participate in the condominium. Isola Piana is therefore private. To access the island it is necessary to go to the Administration Office, at the port.
The island meets its water needs through a network of wells that reach a very deep aquifer and has no discharges into the sea of any kind, since, with a wise policy of purification and recycling, it uses purified wastewater for irrigation. A small thermoelectric plant located on the island provides electricity and uses waste heat to obtain heated water, obtaining significant energy savings, the island is therefore relatively autonomous.
