It is named in a notarial document of 28 October 1206, as “Sancta Maria de Sinnas de Mara”, belonging to the village of Sinnas, which was located on the border between the Giudicato of Calari and that of Arborea. It is currently known as Santa Maria ‘e Croxiu, to indicate the area in which it is located, also the site of the homonymous nuraghe whose blocks were used to build the fence that encloses it; in the report of Monsignor Pilo, of 21 February 1763, it is called Vergine delle Grazie, while the historian Angius defines it as Santa Maria de is aquas, as evidence of a probable thermal building from the Roman era; according to peasant tradition, the reference to water was due to the frequent flooding of the surrounding countryside, in the event of significant rainfall, which caused the overflowing of the nearby Mannu river. Built by local craftsmen, the construction period is unknown and it is presumably from the medieval period, with the addition of the classic seventeenth-century loggia, typical of the rural churches of the area, which offered protection to the devotees and to those who stopped during breaks in agricultural activities. Having fallen into ruin in the 1960s and used as a livestock shelter, it was recovered thanks to the will of the population and reconsecrated on 8 September 1983.
The seventeenth-century altarpiece, by the painter Francesco Pinna, which once embellished the building, is now in the parish, recovered thanks to a wonderful restoration work, which saved it from a long period of decay.
Once upon a time, the celebrations coincided with the expiration of the employment contract between the landowners and the agricultural workers, who enjoyed two days of rest free from commitments; these were September 9 and 10, remembered as “sa festa de is serbidoris”, which also allowed people to reflect on whether or not to renew their work commitment
