The ancient village of San Simone has belonged to the Escolchesi for time immemorial, who own the most fertile lands here. It seems that it was originally built by the Moors.
It is located between Gergei, Mandas, Villanovafranca and Gesico, now completely uninhabited.
The village of San Simone has always been surrounded by fields of wheat as far as the eye can see: in spring a compact sea of green velvet, in June a triumph of golden crops.
The village is located in an area called “Nuraxi” which, as the name suggests, is rich in Nuragic remains.
Inside you can distinguish about thirty lolle (loggias), some very ancient, and a church.
The oldest lolle seem to have been built on foundations for which probable nuraghi ashlars were used. The church of the same name also stands on the nuraghe called Nuraghe S.Simone
Until the seventies there were also giants’ tombs, which disappeared over the years
The village was abandoned due to a plague at the end of 1300.
In the nearby areas numerous lands present piles of stones and remains of complex nuraghes.
Further ahead at 100 m, on the left, the remains of NURAXI MANNU
Never brought to light and never investigated, all around shards of pottery prove its use and its importance.
I found the village very characteristic. It is sad to see its state of relative abandonment. It would be nice to be able to see it enhanced.
