The Riola Sardo Sound Park is located in an easily accessible area of Sardinia, in the Sinis Peninsula, on the central-western coast of the island. The Park, created from abandoned sandstone quarries, is the result of a design by architects Pierpaolo Perra and Alberto Antioco Loche. The work, already winner of the Landscape Award announced by the Autonomous Region of Sardinia in 2008, is part of the Riberas, “rive” Project. In addition to Riola Sardo, Riberas also involves the nearby municipalities of Cabras and Santa Giusta. As the name of the project itself states, water is the link that unites the three centres, located in one of the most important wetlands on the European continent, with a great landscape-environmental impact. In this regard, we can state that, if Riberas, through an urban redevelopment plan, aims to give the three centers of the Sinis the role of ancient custodians of the waters, with the Parco dei Suoni Riola Sardo it aims to become a center of excellence for the dissemination of sound culture in Sardinia. The small canyon in which the project is located is in fact an acoustic space that can be exploited for the particular auditory perception it offers to the visitor. Added to this is the fact that the sound theme is realized in a set of paths that cross the open space of the quarries. The design of the two architects reveals “a renewed attention towards the landscape” understood “as a cultural heritage”. This is one of the reasons why the work obtained one of the ten Italian nominations for the Landscape Prize promoted by the Council of Europe. Fitting harmoniously into the surrounding natural context, Perra and Loche’s ten-year project plays entirely on the use of sandstone and, taking advantage of its color combinations, brings to light the aesthetic identity of the place. The work, developed within the excavation basin in which the extraction activity became operational over the years, recovers the fundamental features of the quarry and then makes them monumental with the simple removal of every element linked to human industry. Following entirely the horizontal line suggested by the skyline, the place becomes a continuous visual reminder of the stone. It is emphasized not only with warm colours, but also through the display of geometric lithic blocks which stand out clearly within the landscape context. In the park area there is a closed space, intended for exhibition space. A newly cut sandstone colonnade frames it, simultaneously protecting a portico shaded by a pergola of slender sunshade panels supported by metal frameworks. The delicacy of the materials used to create the pergola dialogues with the heaviness of the stone. The result is an overall harmony, characterized by a strong evocative value.
