During the Pliocene, just over 3 million years ago, in the volcanic massif of Monte Arci the volcanic activity was essentially effusive and subaerial, with multiple fissure-type eruptions that produced very, very extensive areally lava flows.
Some point-like emission centers are today evidenced by the two particular reliefs locally called Trebina Longa and Trebina Lada which, from a geographical point of view, also constitute the maximum elevation of Monte Arci, reaching respectively the altitudes of 812 m and 795 m above sea level.
The Sardinian oronym of Trebina, which means “tripod”, as Lamarmora wrote, was given to the two reliefs because seen from afar, from the Campidano plain, together with another rock outcrop, they form a triangle which recalls a tripod.
These two volcanic morphostructures of almost cylindrical shape are the result of the filling and subsequent cooling of the lava inside two volcanic chimneys (neck in English), now eroded and originally aligned along a NS direction, which represent the feeding centers of large basaltic flows that characterize the plateau at the top of the relief and which chronologically represent the last eruptive episodes of Monte Arci.
Today, in addition to the particular and documented geological significance assumed by these two geomorphsites, their importance from a naturalistic point of view is also due to the fact that these rocky outcrops have become nesting places for numerous bird species in the niches and ravines of the rocky walls almost vertical.
