We are located in Gonnosfanadiga, in the Spadula area, a few kilometers east of Mount Linas: land immersed in the green countryside is home to immeasurable archaeological treasures. In the area in question there is a megaron temple, a megalithic structure dating back to the Nuragic period of the 12th-9th century BC, evidence of the contagion from different civilizations which, over the centuries, have left an indissoluble imprint of their culture.
The only megaron temple found in southern Sardinia, it is an archaeological context of primary importance with sacred value, enriched by the presence, not far away, of a well temple, also dating back to the Nuragic period, and of the San Giacomo sanctuary, founded in 2010 and whose reopening took place recently.
Near the sacred area there was a village, dating back to 1450 BC, the Middle Bronze Age, and present until the 4th-5th century AD, in the Barbarian Age. Objects of great archaeological value, now stored in the Sardara museum, have been found in the area and some of these suggest the presence of a settlement belonging to the Roman period.
The real ruins of the megaron temple are not yet visible, probably preserved until now thanks to the construction of a small house above the temple, perhaps dating back to the 19th century BC. C., to which a livestock enclosure was added.
These stone constructions protected the temple from presumed collapses. The Spadula area is just one of the Sardinian archaeological sites that are not sufficiently valorised nowadays.
Since 2014, as per the decree of the General Directorate for Cultural and Landscape Heritage of Sardinia, the megaron temple of Sa Spadula has been subject to all the protection provisions envisaged for assets of particular archaeological interest.
Claudio Porta, owner of the land where the temple stands, where he manages the family business, has many years of experience behind him as an assistant in archaeological excavations. «It is our world, it is our origins, we must be proud of it», he stated in reference to the disinterest often shown towards the archeology of Sardinia.
From his words, the respect and concern towards a place with immense historical value and which, from a cultural point of view, still has much to give clearly shines through. Only excavations, which require the necessary permits and funds, would bring to light what is not yet known about the structure.
The treasures of Sardinian archeology represent a potential that is still underestimated, to which only a small group of enthusiasts in the sector often pays attention. An action to promote the archaeological world by the Sardinian population and local authorities would lead to greater awareness of the cultural riches of our land.
